Soul Eater 19, Rocket Powered Mice

By dreadpirateryu

Yes yes, I know, Soul Eater 19 is old news, you say. Well, it’s the only thing I have immediately written, and I figured SOMETHING should be put on here other than just a “starting” filler post. So, since I already have this written out and everything, into a post it goes.

This was originally written as an application for Shirukii of Anime Blog ga Arimasu, where it was unfortunately surpassed by writers much more excellent than myself who also applied. Or rather, they might just have had a style of writing that Shirukii liked more than my style. Whatever the case, it wasn’t accepted, and that’s ok.

So, let’s get to the first actual post, shall we?

The rocket-powered mice, I mean, Witches.
Shinigami sama is trapped! Death City is being destroyed by ocket-powered mice witches! Professor Stein and a few Shibusen students who are probably way more powerful than they should be are heading to fight insanely powerful people and possibly even the Demon God! Extra characters that have nothing to do with the story have no color (were they dragged in from the manga perhaps?)! Shinigami sama is still completely awesome! …wait, those last bits have nothing to do with the story do they? Oh well, they’re still valid points.
Summary:
The story is really heating up in this episode, as one would expect with the last episode drawing ever closer (it’s 24 episodes isn’t it?). In this episode Shinigami sama tells everyone trapped with him (and Death the Kid tells his party heading toward the Demon God) the story of the Demon God, and that he’s buried underneath Death City. Apparently the Demon God is a guy named Asura who has a really, really, really long scarf that he covered his head with (maybe he’s the Doctor!),
(Yes, all of that is his scarf)
and likes to wear 5 or 6 shirts at the same time. He was a part of an 8-man squad that worked with Shinigami sama a long time ago. He was constantly terrified of everything, and eventually went insane and ate his own weapon, as well as harvested the souls of humans. This is something that a human isn’t supposed to be able to do, and Shinigami sama thinks that from the start, Asura probably wasn’t human and was more like an incarnation of something deep within the heart… an incarnation of fear.
So Shinigama sama sealed Asura away, underneath of Death City. He ripped off Asura’s skin, made a bag from his scalp, and sealed him in it. He also had to root his body and soul to Death City to prevent Asura from escaping. Because of this, Shinigami sama cannot leave Death City, period.
Everybody is running down a huge set of stairs while story is being narrated, then we get a bit more of Soul talking to that Imp in his head. Soul still isn’t buying what the Imp says. Then, it’s back to Death City with the rocket-powered mice witches destroying it, killing citizens, and just generally wreaking all kinds of havoc. We see Blair walking around the city in cat form, thinking all the destruction is just part of the Shibusen festival. She heads over to a fisherman, and gets there just before he dies (he gives her a free fish first, such a nice guy). Blair gets pissed, being a cat and loving fish and all that, and goes after the mice witches attacking Death City.
Back to everybody running through the underground areas. They suddenly stop, Maka sensing something terrible, and lecherous, just ahead.
She senses… Maka’s father. Apparently he was able to get out in time before the dimensional box was closed. He turns into he weapon form so Professor Stein can use him to fight.
Bakastar Black Star then hears something coming. It’s the ex-nurse witch Medusa. Stein explains his plan to everyone, he’ll hold off Medusa, Black Star will fight Kronos/Ragnarok who is next in line, Kid, who has his hovering skateboard, will blast past everybody and head for the Frog/witch and werewolf that are heading for the Demon God, and Maka is to head past everyone as well to help Kid.
The battle starts with Medusa, with her blasting out a Vector Arrow spell, times three this time. All three students rush into the maze of arrows. Death the Kid makes it through quickly and easily, having his skateboard to help him. Black Star puts Tsubaki into Fey Blade mode, and breaks through easily as well (it seems he still can’t use it for very long because he turns it off as soon as he makes it through). Maka decides to use a risky method to get through, with every single vector arrow now focused on her. She has to head… straight through the center.
This is either a do-or-die technique. If she’s fast enough, she gets through completely unscathed, and is through. If she isn’t…
Fortunately for our heroine, that’s just her imagination running wild, as she has her eyes closed to “erase her fears” as Medusa puts it. She runs fast enough and gets through the swarm of arrows easily.
Next up, it’s time for Professor Stein to fight Medusa. He starts out blasting her with soulforce when she’s about to attack Maka right after she makes it through. Medusa starts talking about how Professor Stein is the only problem, that everybody else is just too weak to do anything, and if she can take him down, then there will be no problems. Stein has a tad more faith in them though, even calling Medusa an idiot.
A little more taunting, a few more jokes, then they both go Super Saiyan reveal the size of their souls. Also, Stein captured Medusa. When he blasted her with soulforce, he was able to control his soul wavelength (something like an electrical charge was left in her body, according to Stein) and “stitch” her feet to the ground (Soulforce Stitches). He then charges her, blasts her with soulforce again, and stitches her to the wall she impacts… And that’s where things turn a bit.
That right there, is an arrow that is put on the ground. Anything that goes above it, gets quickly and violently pushed in the direction the arrow points. Right as Stein is charging Medusa to take her down, she creates one of those and fires Stein off in the opposite directions. She breaks the stitches holding her, lands on the plate (which affects her as well), and blasts toward Stein. She then uses a few more to pull of a REALLY neat trick. Check the image and see if you can figure out what I mean.
After sending him flying with a kick, she puts another plate directly under Stein, but he uses stitches to hold himself to the ground and keep from being pushed. Obviously he can’t move like that, so she sends a giant snake after him. But, he times things just right by releasing the stitches before getting hit and flies toward Medusa. He’s about to get her, when she conjures a Vector Storm.
She invites him to join her again, asking as a “scientist to another scientist,” stating that he’s also interested in the world she’s trying to create. Stein doesn’t say or do anything, and just stands there. She then conjures a ring of Vector Plates all around them, all pointing toward her. Stein cannot get away anymore.
Then it switches to Kronos/Ragnarok, or rather, the Demon Sword. Black Star gets there, and is about to start fighting him, when Maka arrives. She then demands Black Star to let her fight the Demon Sword instead, wanting to take revenge for when Soul was wounded. Unfortunately, Black Star is going to let her.
Thoughts:
First off: Maka, I’m sorry, you and Soul are awesome and all, but you, ARE AN IDIOT. Just let Black Star fight the Demon Sword. You and your stupid revenge and all that shouldn’t have you fighting the Demon Sword. Not only can it damage Soul in weapon form, but you don’t even have a way to reliably damage him. Just listen to the Professor and go fight the Werewolf and Frog. You’ve beaten the werewolf once already! But you lost to the Demon Sword. Sigh, some people are just darned stubborn and stupid.
The rest of the episode was also quite interesting, with a good bit of plot development. We finally know who the true Demon God is, that it isn’t the Demon Sword at all. We also know a bit about Shinigami sama as well. He’s trapped in Death City now, become one with it (as Stein has said), if you will. I gotta say, it would have sucked to have been Asura’s weapon. Gotten eaten? Ick, brings shudders when I think about it.

Also, despite all the seriousness and fighting and such going on, Soul Eater still manages to retain its comedic aspect. There are quite a few points I was laughing throughout the episode, even directly after a serious portion. That’s probably one reason I like this show so much, because it doesn’t take itself all that seriously. Or rather, it doesn’t try to take itself TOO seriously. Too many anime/manga will start out great, balancing good storyline, seriousness, and comedy, only to completely screw that balance up with the ending being almost complete seriousness, with tons of philosophy of life type of stuff thrown in as well (I’m looking at YOU Full Metal Alchemist anime).

After this initial post, I’ll probably change how the posts are done a little bit, see if I can get them a bit more structured, as well as add a few things. I’ll see what happens as I’m working on all this. I tend to change how I do things quite a bit, and it might take me a while to settle into something specific.

I hope you enjoyed the first post, and hope that you will check back for more later as well :)
